Urban Ecology Glossary

 

Biodiversity - is the variation of life forms within a given ecosystem, biome or for the entireEarth. Biodiversity is often used as a

measure of the health of a biological system. Cities were only designed for people not plants or animals. 

 

Coopetition - the fusion of competition and cooperation and the belief that collaboration is the only way to solve the current challenges

that we all face as businesses and individuals and that together we are stronger and smarter.

 

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) - is a concept whereby organizations consider the interests of society by taking responsibility

for the impact of their activities on customers,suppliers, employees, shareholders, communities and other stakeholders as well as the

environment. This obligation is seen to extend beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legislation and sees organizations

voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for society at large.

 

Edutainment - the fusion of education and entertainment and seeing the importance of making learning enjoyable so that it is impact in

changing people.  Conscious clubbing

 

Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) - is an area of plastic in the central North Pacific Ocean located roughly in an area between 135°

to 155°W and 35° to 42°N. The patch is characterized by exceptionally high concentrations of suspended plastic and other debris that

have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre.

 

Surface Area Vegetation - the concept of utilizing all of the available area in a city to support food growth or other plants. 

This includes roof, vertical and victory gardens.

 

Triple Bottom Line - (people, planet and profit) expanding the traditional reporting framework to take into account environmental and

social performance in addition to financial performance.

 

ThirdSpaces - is a term used in the concept of community building to refer to social surroundings separate from the two usual social

environments of home and the workplace.  One's first space the home, their second space is the work. Third spaces

are important for civil society, democracy, civic engagement,and establishing feelings of a sense of place.
